What Scholarships Are Available for Cybersecurity Students?
Information security was a field originally created on the fly. The great grandparents of cybersecurity were scruffy nerds coming from backgrounds in physics or engineering, or people who simply had a knack for solving puzzles and an insatiable curiosity that kept them up into the early hours of the morning exploring the ins and outs of mainframes and minicomputers.
But that’s all changed today. If you want the top dollar jobs and a fighting chance when going up against wily state-sponsored hackers, you’re going to need a serious education in cybersecurity.
Cybersecurity degree programs are so specialized and new that the conventional financial aid structure is still developing around them. While traditional career paths in medicine, law, and engineering have been around long enough for many waves of professionals to pass through them and endow scholarships to pass on to the next generation, cybersecurity is still a profession in its infancy. According to a 2017 article in CSO Online, the industry is on track for as many as 3.5 million unfilled positions by 2021.
On the other hand, demand for highly educated cybersecurity professionals is so high and has come on so fast that many organizations are willing to throw money at the process in hopes of increasing enrollment and graduation rates in the profession. So although the dynamic changes rapidly, your willingness to be creative and examine all the possible options for funding your education is something that’s likely to be rewarded.
What it Typically Takes to Qualify for a Scholarship
Even in a field that is desperate for new professionals, scholarships aren’t just handed out like candy. Every scholarship fund has certain criteria it uses to sort out qualified candidates from non-hackers. Some scholarships exist largely to make sure talented people from low income backgrounds don’t get passed over without getting a chance to contribute to this high-paying career field, and others are designed to funnel students into certain roles within cybersecurity. You won’t want to waste your time applying for scholarships you won’t qualify for.
So the first thing you should do when researching scholarships is look at their eligibility criteria. No surprises here, most scholarships consider criteria like GPA, race or ethnicity, location, and family financial status. If you’re looking at a scholarship with requirements in any of these areas that you don’t meet, then it’s time to move on.
You should also consider any restrictions that the scholarship might place on you. Because many of the organizations granting scholarships in cybersecurity have very specific motivations for getting professionals into certain areas of the field, there may be restrictions on what you can do after graduation. In particular, the very popular CyberCorps scholarships all require a certain period of government cybersecurity service in return for the grant money. Post-graduation obligations will affect your career path, at least in the early years, so you need to make sure your personal career plans align with the duties you’ll be expected to fulfill once you graduate.
Beyond the basic requirements for eligibility, you will also likely be judged subjectively against other candidates competing for the scholarship. Award committees will base their choices on factors like recommendations from professors and industry professionals, essay submissions, or indications in your background that you are serious about pursuing the career.
You’ll probably have to provide transcripts and possibly your resume or CV if you have been in the workforce already. You’ll also want to include any extracurricular activities you’ve engaged in that show your commitment to security or just to technology work in general. With so many people in the field being self-taught, being able to present a coding project you undertook on your own or an open-source project you participated in can make all the difference in getting your application to the top of the pile when scholarships are handed out.
Best Bets For Cybersecurity Scholarships
When you are scholarship hunting in most other fields, your first stop should almost always be the financial aid office at the university you plan to attend. But that does not necessarily hold true when it comes to cybersecurity scholarships. The funding sources are rarely school-specific and the field is evolving so rapidly that even the financial aid experts might not be keeping up.
Cybersecurity scholarships are often more generous than those found in other fields, but sometimes come with more commitments. This might mean being restricted from stacking up multiple scholarships to cover your tuition. You’ll have to decide on an individual basis whether going after one scholarship that requires obligations that restrict your access to other grant money is worth that trade-off.
On the other hand, you can also look at this commitment-based scholarships in terms of long-range job planning. If you’re looking for a position with the NSA, for example, the Stokes Educational Scholarship Program may be a better way to get your foot in the door than waiting to apply until after you are done with school.
It’s also good to keep in mind that cybersecurity is just a subset of information technology. Many IT-focused scholarships can also be applied to cybersecurity degree programs.
CyberCorps: Scholarship For Service
CyberCorps is the United States government’s best effort to jumpstart cybersecurity education to expand the pool of qualified candidates for government security positions. In 2015, the chief information officer (CIO) for the federal government identified as many as 10,000 cybersecurity posts within government agencies that remained unfilled.
That number was disturbing at the time but was also projected to increase as the general hiring pressures in the field drove up private sector wages, leaving government positions less competitive for graduates.
CyberCorps was established to counter that trend, providing generous stipends (ranging up to $22,500 for undergraduate students and up to $34,000 for graduate students for 2017) to cover expenses including tuition and fees at participating institutions.
The number of those institutions is somewhat limited, but each is guaranteed to be certified by the NSA as a Center of Academic Excellence for Information Assurance Education (CAE-IAE), meeting an exacting standard for the quality of their core curriculum and instructors. That qualification is something worth looking for regardless of whether or not you are applying for a SFS grant.
Those scholarships are not without their own requirements, however. In order to fulfill your end of the bargain, you will be required, after graduation, to take a position in a qualifying federal government cybersecurity role for a length of time equal to your participation in the scholarship program. In other words, if you took two years to get your degree and were in the SFS program both years, you would have to serve two years after graduation. You owe the government a full calendar year of employment (paid, of course) for every year of tuition the scholarship covers.
Because of this, you also have to be a U.S. citizen and meet other conditions necessary to hold federal employment, including the ability to qualify for a security clearance.
You will also have to serve in a qualifying internship during your schooling if you receive the scholarship for more than a year.
Both the internship and the job may require you to relocate. Most positions, however, will be in the Washington D.C. area.
The scholarships are merit-based and awarded largely at the discretion of the Principal Investigator at each institution who manages the program. The criteria at each school can vary considerably, so you’re advised to contact the coordinator early on to establish your qualifications. For more information, see our Guide to the CyberCorps Scholarship for Service.
A 2017 bill being considered by the Senate would expand the program further, increasing the number of participating institutions and including certain private sector jobs in critical infrastructure as meeting the post-graduation obligations.
Nonprofit Industry Consortiums
Because the technology industry in general has a heavy reliance on cybersecurity professionals, a number of educational nonprofits have been established to disseminate cybersecurity information and encourage educational efforts. Some of these groups, including the Center for Cyber Safety and Education, also provide scholarship funds for cybersecurity students.
The Center is underwritten by corporations like Raytheon, J.P. Morgan Chase, and by other security-oriented trade groups, like the International Information Security Certification Consortium. The Center offers scholarships for around 20 undergraduate and 20 graduate scholars each year, of up to $5,000 per recipient, requiring only a 3.3 GPA or better. You can attend school in either the U.S. or internationally and do not need to be currently enrolled to apply.
This is easily one of the most flexible options for a cybersecurity scholarship.
The Center also offers some specialized scholarships, such as the Raytheon and (ISC)2 Women’s Scholarships.
Technology Companies and Organizations
Many technology companies direct their support for cybersecurity education toward larger industry consortiums, but some also sponsor their own technology or security scholarships. Xerox, for example, offers the Technical Minority Scholarship program, which has awards ranging between $1,000 and $10,000. And networking giant Cisco sponsors the Snort Scholarship, a $10,000 grant open to any graduate or undergraduate cybersecurity student. Neither has any further obligations.
There are other organizations that provide scholarships because of their heavy investment in information technology, even if they are not technology companies themselves. These scholarships are not always specific to cybersecurity, but often cover a range of possible STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) fields which includes information technology or information security. The Department of Defense SMART (Science, Mathematics, & Research for Transformation) scholarship program is one example.
SMART is an extraordinarily generous scholarship, covering full tuition in addition to offering a salary and benefits. However, like the CyberCorps scholarships, it requires a service commitment including serving summer internships at DoD facilities and accepting a post-graduation position with DoD. Unlike CyberCorps, however, citizens of some foreign nations are eligible to participate in SMART.
The Stokes Program is another government-backed scholarship that has very generous terms—up to $30,000 in tuition coverage annually. Recipients are expected to take positions with the National Security Agency after graduation. This means the scholarship has very stringent background check requirements, and is enormously competitive.
